Goodbye Horses is a thirty-six-page silent graphic novella that follows an ageing couple with an unusual pastime: travelling the country in search of roadside accidents, infamous crime scenes and places marked by tragedy. Part dark comedy, part character study, the story explores humanity’s fascination with death, disaster and the uncomfortable curiosity that draws us towards the darker corners of existence. Inspired by themes of morbid curiosity, rubbernecking and the spectacle surrounding true crime, the project examines our tendency to turn moments of grief into objects of fascination. Through playful imagery and dark humour, Goodbye Horses presents a light-hearted response to an inherently sombre subject, inviting readers to question why we are so captivated by the macabre. Created as my final major project, the novella was developed alongside a mixed-media animation, allowing me to explore the relationship between illustration, graphic design and storytelling. Told entirely without dialogue, the narrative relies on expression, composition and atmosphere to communicate emotion, challenging me to refine my visual language and strengthen my approach to sequential storytelling. Combining analogue processes with digital techniques, Goodbye Horses reflects my interest in creating work that is both playful and provocative, while pushing the boundaries of my practice as a multidisciplinary designer.
