I was approached by the management of UK rock band Massive Wagons, Rock People Management, to create the artwork for the 2019 reissue of their single, Buck. The song drew inspiration from the story of Buck Ruxton, a Lancashire doctor whose crimes became one of the region’s most infamous criminal cases. The brief called for artwork that reflected the dark and unsettling subject matter of the song while creating a strong visual identity for the release. I developed an illustration that explored the narrative and atmosphere surrounding the track, using imagery intended to convey its darker themes rather than simply illustrate the events themselves. The finished artwork formed part of the visual identity for the 2019 reissue, bringing together the song’s historical inspiration and darker themes in a single illustrative piece. The project provided an opportunity to explore a more narrative and atmospheric approach to the artwork, while responding to the distinctive subject matter behind the release.
